Defending The Blue
Shark overfishing is one of the most urgent yet under-addressed ocean crises of our time. Each year, an estimated 100 million sharks are killed, primarily for their fins, meat, liver oil, and cartilage—many in unregulated, unsustainable ways. This decimation of shark populations is catastrophic for ocean health, as sharks are apex predators critical for maintaining balance in marine ecosystems. Over the past 50 years, global shark populations have declined by more than 70%, pushing many species to the brink of extinction. At Ocean Bound, we’re committed to reversing this trend by supporting innovative, science-backed global projects that protect sharks in the wild, create marine protected areas, and promote sustainable fishing practices. By standing up for sharks, we’re standing up for the health and future of our oceans.
Restoring Rainforests
Coral reefs, often called the “rainforests of the sea,” support over 25% of all marine life—yet they cover less than 1% of the ocean floor. These vibrant ecosystems are vanishing at an alarming rate due to rising ocean temperatures, acidification, pollution, and destructive fishing practices. In just the last three decades, the world has lost over 50% of its coral reefs, and if current trends continue, we could lose up to 90% by 2050. This loss isn’t just ecological—it’s personal. Reefs provide food, coastal protection, and livelihoods for over 500 million people worldwide. At OceanBound, we’re taking action by funding coral restoration projects, deploying reef-safe materials, and supporting marine scientists working on innovative reef recovery solutions. Together, we can regrow what’s been lost and protect what remains.
